What is Athletics?

Athletics refers to a collection of sporting events that involve running, jumping, throwing, and walking. It is one of the oldest and most traditional forms of organized sports, with roots tracing back to ancient civilizations like Greece, where the Olympic Games were first held.

Athletics is typically divided into three main categories:

  1. Track Events – These include running races of various distances such as sprints (100m, 200m, 400m), middle-distance (800m, 1500m), long-distance (5000m, 10,000m), hurdles, and relays.
  2. Field Events – These consist of jumping and throwing events, such as the long jump, high jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot put, discus throw, javelin throw, and hammer throw.
  3. Combined Events – These include competitions like the decathlon (for men) and heptathlon (for women), where athletes compete across multiple track and field events over two days, accumulating points based on their performances in each event.
