Skeleton System:

The Skeleton System is the body’s structural framework, providing support, protection, and enabling movement. It also plays vital roles in mineral storage and blood cell production. The skeletal system consists of 206 bones in adults and is divided into two main parts:

1. Axial Skeleton:

  • Skull: Protects the brain and forms the face.
  • Vertebral Column: A series of 33 vertebrae that protect the spinal cord and support the body.
  • Rib Cage: Includes ribs and the sternum, protecting the heart and lungs.

2. Appendicular Skeleton:

  • Upper Limbs: Includes the arms, wrists, and hands (e.g., humerus, radius, ulna).
  • Lower Limbs: Includes the legs, ankles, and feet (e.g., femur, tibia, fibula).
  • Shoulder Girdle: Comprises the clavicle and scapula, connecting the arms to the torso.
  • Pelvic Girdle: Composed of the hip bones, supporting the weight of the body and connecting the legs to the torso.

Bone Functions:

  • Support: Provides a rigid framework for the body.
  • Protection: Shields vital organs, such as the brain, heart, and lungs.
  • Movement: Works with muscles to allow movement via joints.
  • Mineral Storage: Stores essential minerals like calcium and phosphorus.
  • Blood Cell Production: Bone marrow in certain bones produces red and white blood cells.

The skeletal system is essential not only for physical structure and movement but also for maintaining mineral balance and overall health.
